Brian's been out and about again, meeting up with Sunday's stall holders. Yesterday he caught up with fashion blogger, stylist and designer Lucie Marquis and her co-designer Camilla Boler of Pearly Queens.

candle matches

How cute is this little box of candles that my grandma gave me from 1900? The tips of the candles can be lit by striking them against the side of the box (just like matches).

Brian HQ has been a little quiet over the past week... Anna is on a roadtrip in America - riding horses and scouring vintage fleamarkets and I've been styling the new Biba collection, at Bestival and am now gearing up for London Fashion week.

Bestival definitely felt like the end of summer for me and I've been getting very excited about some new winter stock for Brian so we've just put in an order for some super-cute woollies, winter dresses and boots!

To get you in the mood, I thought I'd post a picture of this wintery card that is currently sitting on my mantlepiece. It was given to me by my aunty who saved it from the 60s, but is actually a Vogue cover from the 1920s. Cute non?

Alice's chocolate birthday cake

150g butter
8 medium eggs
salt
400g chocolate (dark)
caster sugar
tub of creme fraiche
zest of 1 lemon

Heat the oven to 180C/Gas Mark 4 and use a little butter to grease two 15" round cake tins. Separate the eggs into two bowls. Whisk the yolks with a pinch of salt and set aside.

Meanwhile melt all the chocolate and butter in a heatproof bowl placed over a pan of simmering water. Do not allow to get too hot. Once melted allow to cool off for 5 mins or so and mix in the egg yolks.

In a separate bowl whisk the egg whites until stiff peaks, then whisk in approx 3 tablespoons of caster sugar. Using a metal spoon fold in the chocolate mixture.

Bake for 15 mins and cool thoroughly before sandwiching together with the creme fraiche and lemon zest mixture. I cut a heart out of paper and dusted icing sugar around it to finish off Alice's cake, but you can cut whatever shape you like :)

Dorris Does

Meet the lovely Pippi Jolley:



She runs Dorris Does - the cutest, most amazing little treasure trove of vintage clothing and beautiful handmade jewellery in the Stables Market in Camden that we've ever seen:


She was nice enough to sit down and have a cup of tea with Brian today and answer some of his questions. Here's what they chatted about:

Brian: How did Dorris Does begin?

Pippi: Dorris Does started as a little jewellery stall in Camden Lock Market. I wanted to create cute vintage looking treasures without the hefty price tag. This transferred into my love for all things vintage and providing my customers with beautiful hand picked garments and accessories all in a little Aladdin's cave.

Brian: What is your most treasured vintage item?

Pippi: A silver charm bracelet my godmother left me, the chain was my great grandfathers and my dad bought her all the charms, this is probably where my love for charms came from.

Brian: What is your favourite way to spend Sunday?

Pippi: At Camden Market working on my stall making necklaces all day long with lots of cups of tea in between.

Brian: Do you have a nickname?

Pippi: It's Dorris, yes with two r's because its nice to be different sometimes. My boyfriend gave me that name because he said I'm like an old lady most of the time.

Brian: Tell is something we don't know about you...

Pippi: I'm studying jewellery design at Central Saint Martins.

Brian: What was the best birthday you ever had?

Pippi: My 21st this summer, I had an alcoholic tea party, I discovered that vodka and tonic is supposed to be drunk from a teacup.

Brian: And finally what is your favourite cake?

Pippi: My favourite cake has to be the fairy cakes my grandma makes, I could eat them all day long.
